WebGL around the net, 18 July 2013

Back in action… this week in WebGL features games, in-browser modeling and HTML5/WebGL integration.

  • Toronto-based Swappz Interactive has created an interactive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the kids using Verold Studio. Here’s how they did it. http://verold.com/blog/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-on-the-web-in-3d
  • 3D artists may be interested in  SculptGL, a tiny sculpting application powered by WebGL. SculptGL features dynamic subdivision, decimation, and adaptive sculpting. VERY easy to use… it has direct integration with Sketchfab and Verold, too.
  • Going to SIGGRAPH? Serious OpenGL and WebGL developers won’t want to miss the Khronos All Day BOF Blitz on July 24th, featuring WebGL, OpenGL, OpenGL ES and COLLADA/glTF BOFs.  http://www.khronos.org/news/events/siggraph-anaheim-2013#collada_bof
  • Inspired by Jerome Etienne’s recent posting on integrating HTML5 and WebbGL, JavaScript developer Jens Arps has created a demo that renders a fully accessible iframe element in a WebGL scene. You can actually interact with the page content display on the virtual computer… try leaving a comment! This piece goes to show how much human factors work there is to be done in this area, but it is a fantastic attempt.
  • UK-based agency Moving Brands worked with London band Duolog to create Machine Stop http://www.machinestop.com/, an interactive 3D music video for their new single, using WebGL and Kinect.
  • Here a few nice WebGL visualizations for statistics and economics http://www.artemis-econometrics.com/. Double-click to change to a different chart type.
  • Developer Ivan Kuckir has added 3D support to his WebGL-based graphics library, IvanK Lib. The site features easy demos of  loading and displaying an external model in 30 lines of code, and Dino Hunt, a 3D first person shoot that’s pretty fun, written all in IvanK Lib.
  • JSModeler creator Viktor Kovacs just released a new 3D Tic Tac Toe Game. Nice… I can’t figure out how to beat it. :-(
  • For noobs who want to learn WebGL, Xavier Bourry has created an interactive course with a simple integrated IDE. Nice.
